Why have there been so many green methanol projects in recent years?

Over the past two years, if one closely follows the new energy, chemicals, and shipping industries, a notable trend emerges:
The green methanol project is becoming increasingly frequent.
From resource-rich regions like Northeast China and Inner Mongolia to coastal port cities, green methanol is gradually moving from conceptual discussions to actual project development.
Why these two years in particular?
Shipping demand is on the rise, and green methanol is gaining attention, with a key driver coming from the shipping industry.
As international shipping decarbonization requirements continue to advance, shipowners are seeking new alternatives beyond traditional fuels.

Routes such as methanol, ammonia, LNG, and biofuels are all under development. Methanol, being a liquid at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, has already established a relatively mature industrial foundation in storage, transportation, and refueling, thus entering the practical application stage first.

As methanol-powered ships become more prevalent, ports are beginning to develop refueling capabilities, and green methanol is gradually shifting from a question of "whether it will be used" to "whether supply can keep up.".

China has the capability to develop
The conditions for green methanol, as well as its production, rely on green electricity, hydrogen sources, carbon sources, and chemical engineering capabilities.

Certain regions in China happen to possess all these resources simultaneously.

Wind and solar power can provide green electricity, which can further be used to produce hydrogen. When combined with biomass or other renewable carbon sources, it can form:

This also provides a new way for regions rich in renewable energy resources to utilize them—by converting green energy that is difficult to store and transport directly into liquid fuels that are easier to store and transport.
The industrial chain is gradually taking shape, whereas green methanol was previously more confined to the production end.

Now, the links in production, transportation, storage, certification, port refueling, and vessel usage are gradually being connected.
As downstream demand becomes increasingly clear, front-end projects will naturally increase.
However, a large number of projects does not mean all of them can be successfully implemented.

The supply of raw materials, the cost of green electricity, green certifications, long-term procurement agreements, and product pricing will all affect whether the project can ultimately be put into production.

In the future, the real competition will not only be about planning production capacity but also about who can truly integrate the entire industrial chain.

What does it mean for the valve industry? Green methanol appears to be a topic in the new energy sector, but when it comes to actual engineering, it still involves a complex set of chemical installations.

From hydrogen production and gas treatment to methanol synthesis, storage, and loading, different stages involve varying media, temperatures, pressures, and operational requirements.
This means that for valves and other industrial equipment, the real concern is not whether "green methanol is on the rise," but rather:

What changes are occurring in engineering conditions after the emergence of new energy routes.
New energy changes the source of energy, but the project ultimately still comes down to individual equipment, pipelines, and specific operating conditions.

So, the increasing number of green methanol projects is not just a concept that suddenly became popular.
Behind it are several forces converging simultaneously, including shipping carbon reduction, new energy consumption, chemical industry transformation, and port infrastructure construction.

What is truly worth paying attention to is not how much the project has been planned, but how much can ultimately go from drawings to installations, and then from installations to the market.

Stunt Valve Group will continue to pay attention to the development of energy and chemical industries such as green methanol, green hydrogen, and coal chemical, as well as the new requirements for industrial equipment under new working conditions.
